Harrison Schmitt: The Last Man to Walk on the Moon

Harrison Hagan Schmitt (born July 3, 1935) is an American geologist, former NASA astronaut, and politician.

Schmitt is the first scientist and the twelfth and last person to have walked on the Moon. He was born in Santa Rita, New Mexico, and earned a bachelor's degree in geology from the California Institute of Technology and a doctorate from Harvard University. After graduating from MIT, Schmitt became an astronaut with NASA and served as a backup crew member for the Apollo 15 and 16 missions. In 1972, he became part of the Apollo 17 mission, which was the last manned mission to the Moon.

After his astronaut career, Schmitt worked as a university professor and a businessman. He also served as the chairman of the NASA Advisory Council from 2005 to 2009. In 2010, he was elected to the New Mexico State Senate, where he served for one term.
