Damaging Winds, Torrential Rain, and Storm Surge Devastate Region

Category 1 Hurricane Beryl Barrels Through Tulum

HURRICANE BERYL has made landfall as a Category 1 storm on the Texas coast, slamming the state with heavy rain and winds. Satellite images and forecasts show that Beryl, now a tropical storm, will strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane before it makes landfall again in the Yucatán Peninsula.

Hurricane Beryl first made landfall near the popular tourist area of Tulum on Tuesday as a strong Category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds. The hurricane unloaded damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and dangerous storm surge over a significant portion of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

As of Wednesday morning, Beryl is still lingering over the Yucatán Peninsula, bringing heavy rain and wind to the region. The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning for the entire Yucatán Peninsula, as well as parts of Belize and Guatemala.
